Warning: Spoilers Ahead
I will be honest here — I’m a freaking emotional mess right now. A part of me is so bummed that tomorrow is the season 1 finale of Z Nation — no more fun zombie Friday nights! And another part of me is scared to death.
The Official Synopsis From Syfy — “The remaining survivors must face an evil doctor, the loss of one of their own, and a threat that could end the world … and it ain’t zombies.”
Yikes! Now, the focus of the finale is supposed to be on the group of survivors taking a little side-trip to Colorado to try and find Dr. Merch, who was the one who created the experimental drug that Murphy was injected with. But honestly, I virtually zoned out everything else in that synopsis except for the part about losing another one of our own. It was just 2 episodes ago that we lost Mack and Addy (Kind of? Sort of? Maybe?), and the thought of losing another just tears me apart. Who will it be? Well, I don’t think it will be Murphy unless there is another survivor out there who also survived a zombie bite. Cassandra is definitely the most expendable character since she’s had the smallest role. Or could it be “Doc” given the reference to a doctor in the episode? I think all of the viewers are going to be nervous as hell for their favorite character until the finale airs tomorrow night.
In the meantime, check out the below sneak peek of the finale and also my list of the top 5 OMG moments of season 1. Given that just about every episode of Z Nation has had at least one shocking moment, this was not an easy task at all. However, a few scenes stood out from the rest and so much so that no matter how hard you try and how many shots of Jack Daniels you down, you just can’t get those images out of your head. Check out my list, and if your fav didn’t make the cut, chime in the comments below and tell us yours!
The season 1 finale of Z Nation is titled “Doctor of the Dead” and airs tomorrow night at 10/9c on Syfy.
Need to catch up or just a refresher of last week’s episode? Then, be sure to check out my review of episode 1.12 “Murphy’s Law.”

MARY’S PICKS — TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS OF SEASON 1
5. RIP Charles Garnett (Episode 1.06 — “Resurrection Z”)
I was actually at Walker Stalker Con Atlanta when this episode aired, and so I was not able to watch it live. I had no idea that Charles Garnett had been killed until I walked into the Z Nation panel, and some of the people there filled me in. And, to tell you the truth, I was so in shock that I still didn’t believe it until Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler came on stage and broke the news to the audience that, indeed, Charles Garnett had died in the last episode. Oh my freaking God!
If there were any doubt that Karl Schaefer was just yanking our chains when he said that no one was safe on this show, it all completely went out the window after this episode. And, we should keep this in mind when we think about who may die in tomorrow’s season finale. No one is safe, folks. No one.
4. Murphy Takes a Bite Out of Crime (Episode 1.07 — “Welcome to the FU-Bar”)
Up until this episode, the only things we knew were happening to Murphy were obvious physical changes. His hair was falling out, his skin was aging rapidly, and his teeth were rotting. He was clearly morphing into some kind of human/zombie zybrid but little did we know that the transformation was far more than we could see.
In this episode, after Murphy is cornered by a lawless thug and having no weapon to defend himself, he takes a big bite out of crime — literally. He attacks the guy, biting a big chunk out of his neck, leaving him dazed, confused and certain that he had been bitten by a zombie. However, the shocker didn’t come until later after the same guy had been shot and killed — and he did NOT turn into a Z.
So, here’s our first big clue that Murphy is not like all of the other boys because besides his blood, any of his bodily fluids — including his saliva — holds the cure to the zombie virus.
3. Mind-Morphing Murphy (Episode 1.12 — “Murphy’s Law”)
We had been told that we would learn a “startling discovery” about Murphy’s abilities in this episode, and boy, was that an understatement. I originally thought we would find out that Murphy had some kind of “medical” gift like his blood being able to cure some other dreadful disease like cancer. And, of course, we already knew that Murphy could control the zombies, thus giving him the name “The Messiah Murphy.”
But, even after knowing all of that, I would have never guessed that Murphy’s new skill would be his blood and bodily fluids giving him the ability to control people. Just a little bit of saliva or blood, and Murphy can make you his own personal slave. Murphy was also very quick to use his new skill in the episode by forcing one of the bad guys to blow off his own head. This all was definitely a shocker, and I’m sure will go down as one of the most memorable moments of the entire series.
2. OMG, They Just Killed Doc… NOT! (Episode 1.04 — “Full Metal Zombie”)
While this is embarrassing as hell, I’ll admit here that I fell for the ending of this episode — hook, line and sinker. Yes, I actually thought Doc had been killed by the grenade in the air shaft, and he had already zombified. Of course, after we finally realize that Doc is alive after Warren barely misses him with a bullet, I jumped off the couch and cheered. But, I also laughed until I nearly cried because this scene is by far one of the funniest of the entire season and earned Doc the title as THE comic relief of the series.
1. Sexy Murphy and Yummy Pie (Episode 1.11 — “Sisters of Mercy”)
For me, there is absolutely no competition as to the top OMG/WTF moment of the season. No matter how creepy the zombie or how shocking the character death, I don’t think anything could top that freaky-deaky sex-and-pie scene. Ever since I interviewed Russell Hodgkinson (“Doc”) and he mentioned a really kinky sex scene coming up, I suspected that Murphy would be the one getting lucky. But, never, ever in my wildest dreams did I think it would turn out like THAT.
I personally think one of the writers must have a weird fetish for pie, but regardless, it’s going to take something insanely outrageous to ever top this scene.
