Warning: General spoilers ahead
Last weekend at Walker Stalker Con Nashville, Bates Motel stars Kenny Johnson (“Caleb”) and Nestor Carbonell (“Sheriff Alex Romero”) treated fans to a Q&A panel where they discussed their characters, what’s to come for the rest of season 4, and also whether we should expect to ever see Caleb again. The only thing Kenny Johnson could say is that as far as the audience knows, Caleb is chilling in Costa Rica, and he really couldn’t be sure when or if Caleb would be making another appearance. In other words, it didn’t sound like we would be seeing the character anytime this season.
Little did I know I was so, so wrong and that Caleb would be re-introduced in just a week. When Chick (Ryan Hurst) showed back up a couple of weeks ago at Dylan’s weed farm, my heart sank because I knew he would be looking for both Dylan and Caleb as they are somewhat responsible for the beatdown he got last season. However, my fears were more towards Dylan since he’s still around and more accessible. Well, as we saw in last week’s episode, Chick’s lust for vengeance is far-reaching because he reveals to Norma (Vera Farmiga) that he knows Caleb raped her, that Dylan is Caleb’s son, and uses this as low blow attempt to force Norma to give him Caleb’s whereabouts.
Needless to say, Norma plays dumb and says that she has no idea where Caleb is, nor does she care. Of course, she is lying, and in the promo for Monday’s episode, we see her talking on the phone and sure enough, Caleb is on the other end! After seeing that promo, I’m sure a great deal of fans are grumbling because he’s not the most popular character. However, I personally love good stories of redemption, and so, I couldn’t be more thrilled that Caleb may be returning to White Pine Bay. But, the question is will Caleb be safe? Chick really isn’t in any shape to do anything to Caleb, but I’m sure he could find somebody to do his dirty work for him.
And, what will Romero (Nestor Carbonell) think of his wife being raped by her own brother? I was actually starting to really like seeing Norma and Romero together. For the first time since the series began, she seems happy, and that woman deserves some happiness with all the hell she’s been through. So, hopefully Caleb and this deep, buried secret won’t put too much of a strain on Norma’s new, peaceful life.
Episode 4.06 of Bates Motel is titled “The Vault” and airs Monday at 9/8c on A&E.
