Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Like a page ripped from the legendary film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Minx (Kylie Rogers) was supposedly outed as being Drill-possessed by a whole slew of pointing fingers in the final moments of last week’s episode. On the surface, that reveal seriously blows. I mean, poor Wes (Barry Sloane) just lost his wife, and to have to stand there and see his only child taken (and effectively killed) by Drill, that’s some serious hatred this alien being must have for the family. But, is it that simple? I think it’s a pretty safe guess that some child at that facility is now Drill’s puppet, but is it so obviously Minx?
Well, the answer is a simple “No.” Drill has proven time and time again that his level of intelligence far surpasses that of any human, and so, it would make no sense for him to give blatant hints of his identity to dozen of children. In fact, it would make much more sense if pointing the finger (literally!) at Minx would serve as a perfect frame job, thus giving time for the real child possessed by Drill to escape, right?
That’s all I can tell you because anything more would be major spoilers for this fantastic episode. Drill has had a plan from the beginning, and he has executed that plan perfectly and meticulously. He has fooled some of the best minds, and honestly, no one could have seen coming what he does in this episode, not even Wes or Claire. Some people have commented that this series really appears to have been written for only 1 season, as there’s not enough material to go much beyond that. Well, this episode is a game-changer, folks, and opens the floodgates for plenty of material for a season 2 — and beyond, if the show is so fortunate.
Now, speaking of a season 2. It’s no secret that the ratings for this series haven’t been spectacular. But they have gone up in recent weeks, and I truly hope once people see Monday’s episode, the minds of those who have doubted the show’s potential will be changed. With all the reboots and remakes coming out of Hollywood these days, I swear I had started to think that the creativity in the television industry had come to a standstill, that we were condemned to years of boring recycled shows because no one had a single original idea left.
Then, The Whispers came along on ABC. It didn’t get much hype, and ABC decided to put it last in line for its 2014-2015 season lineup. Ironically, with the genius of Steven Spielberg tapped to bring a virtually unknown Ray Bradbury short to life, it has become, in my opinion, one of the best new series of the year. So, even if ABC decides to pass on a 2nd season, the hope is some other network will come along and pick up this gem. With the right amount of publicity and exposure, I have no doubt The Whispers can prove to be a hit and finally get the attention it so rightfully deserves.
The season 1 penultimate episode of The Whispers is titled “Traveller In The Dark” and airs Monday at 10/9c on ABC.
