Warning: Both comic book and television series spoilers ahead
Last week we ended with Rick’s group outside the gates of the Alexandria Safe Zone, about to embark on a brand new chapter of The Walking Dead history. Things are about to change, but before that can happen, the group must look back on their lives, the things they have done, and ultimately decide to leave all of that behind for something new and something better. This is the focus of Sunday’s episode, which is very appropriately titled “Remember.”
As Aaron explained, the first step in the process is to “audition” for membership in the ASZ. Aaron and Eric both believe they are good candidates, but the person who makes the final decision is the official leader of the community. This same person is also the one who decides where in the community each new member would best fit and who assigns jobs to everyone. And, the big question is who will this person be in the television series/
To be honest, I have been secretly hoping that the writers would make the leader in the show the same person as in the comics because I did like him. He was a very charismatic and stately man by the name of Douglas Monroe — a former Ohio Congressman and someone who was very well-respected, both before the outbreak and after. Except for his occasional wandering eye and skirt-chasing, he was a man of integrity and high morals, something that a community like Alexandria needed.
Unfortunately, I am strongly suspecting that the writers decided to ditch the character, as well as his wife Regina, altogether. Perhaps because Andrea — the one woman that Douglas fancied the most — is dead? Or perhaps because someone decided it was time that the show had its first female leader?
I’m betting on the latter. One of the preview clips mentions a new character that we haven’t seen yet by the name of “Deanna.” Is the name “Deanna” perhaps a spin on both “Douglas” and “Regina,” more or less combining the two characters into one?
I still have a faint hope that Monroe will emerge as Alexandria’s leader in Sunday’s episode. But if not, I will be curious to see who has been cast for the role and what he or she can offer and bring to the series and overall story line.
The Walking Dead airs on Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
