Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Over the past few weeks, the writers have done an impeccable job in crafting the episodes to put the spotlight on character development but at the same time, have made the storylines interesting enough to not lose the viewers’ interest. Kudos and plaudits to all for that. However, this week any further character development takes a backseat with the intensity kicked up to high gear, and the sh*t getting very real, very fast.
Last week’s episode ended with Miller (Thomas Jane) losing his job, likely because the police had been bought by Anderson Dawes. But, does that stop him? Nope. Miller’s behavior becomes more erratic, and he continues to go even further off the rails. He’s lost his job and nearly lost his life, but remains obsessed with Julie Mao to the point of taking a ship to her last known location.
However, the big development is the crew of the Rocinante discover they have a stowaway on board. The guy’s name is Kenzo (Elias Toufexis) and is the same creepy dude we saw in the last episode keeping Holden (Steven Strait) under surveillance with his robotic eye. He is caught broadcasting an encrypted radio transmission and claims to just be running away from Fred Johnson (Chad Coleman) after getting on his bad side. Amos goes completely ape-sh*t and wants to just kill the guy, but he makes an impression on Holden after saving the Rocinante from detection by a nearby MCR patrol. Can this stranger be trusted?
Not likely since we learn later in the episode that he’s a spy for Chrisjen (Shohreh Aghdashloo) as part of her plan to monitor Holden as much as possible and figure out if he’s responsible for the chain reaction of events that have put them on the fast track to a war. This also includes a visit to Holden’s mother way out in Timbut 2, and by the end of the visit, she’s convinced he’s innocent and not even close to being a terrorist. Unfortunately, her superiors don’t really believe her and take action anyways — a black ops team is put together with one purpose only and that is to take out James Holden.
Episode 1.07 of The Expanse is titled “Windmills” and airs Tuesday at 10/9c on Syfy.
