Warning: General spoilers ahead
Still scratching your head from last week’s ending and wondering if Miller (Thomas Jane) has finally gone off the rails? I mean, what could the Mormons and their “cathedral ship,” the Nauvoo, possibly have to do with obliterating Eros and the Protomolecule threat that’s lurking within? As we will find out in tonight’s spectacular episode, Miller is far from being insane and comes up with an ingenious — albeit very risky — plan of ridding the world of the Eros/Protomolecule threat.
But, before that, we do check in with Chrisjen (Shohreh Aghdashloo) after her hilarious “What in the fuck is this?” moment last week. After the stealth ship that Fred Johnson (Chad Coleman) pointed in her direction is salvaged, she learns that there are 13 bodies on board, and all of them have listed as their most recent employer Protogen Corporation. And, upon digging even further, it is revealed that Protogen has ties to Jules Mao and his business interests. That’s when it hits her. Fred Johnson dropped the Derelict stealth ship in her lap for her to connect the dots between Protogen and a fleet of stealth ships. With Errinwright (Shawn Doyle) serving as mediator, she meets with Jules Mao and confronts him with the information. Of course, he tap-dances around the entire thing, but ultimately, he’s not happy with how far Chrisjen has gotten, and he’s certainly not thrilled with Errinwright who just trivializes the entire situation.
Moving on to the Nauvoo and the big storyline of the episode, Miller and Fred Johnson meet with Holden (Steven Strait) and Naomi (Dominique Tipper) to outline his plan for taking out Eros. It’s actually pretty simple but at the same time, brilliant. Because of the massive size of the Nauvoo, the idea is to set off explosives on all of the docks of Eros and then, crash the Nauvoo into Eros, causing it to veer off-course and crash into the Sun. They are to use the Rocinante to dispatch deployment teams that will be responsible for placing the explosives on Eros, and right after that, the Nauvooo will arrive to collide with Eros sending on a course with the Sun. Sounds like a pretty cool plan, huh? (well, unless you’re a Mormon, in which case you’re probably pretty damn pissed!)
Yes, it’s more than just a cool plan, it’s flat-out genius — but, this is assuming all goes as planned. As with just about anything else, you just know something’s going to go sideways. And, it does — but it’s not what you would expect. Hold onto the rails, folks, because the episode ends with the mother of all shockers and a revelation about the Protomolecule that’s so big that the team realizes they really have no idea what they’re truly dealing with.
Episode 2.04 of The Expanse is titled “Godspeed” and airs tonight at 10/9c on Syfy.
