Warning: General Spoilers Ahead
For those who are missing Denis Leary after breaking ground at FX with his hit drama Rescue Me, you are in luck. Tonight, Denis Leary returns to FX but this time in a comedy called Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll. Leary plays a washed out rock’n’roll star named Johnny Rock who had everything going for him in the 1990s. He was the lead singer for one of the biggest bands at the time, The Heathens, and from every indication, he was about to become the next Mick Jagger. The crowds loved him. The critics loved him. The girls loved him. But, Johnny loved some other things more. Johnny’s vices were booze, coke, weed, and banging all of his friends’ wives, including the wife of his best friend, Flash (John Corbett), who also happened to be the lead guitarist for the band. Bottom line — Johnny crashed and burned in the worst possible way.
25 years later, Johnny’s trying to get the band back together, and the key to that may be his daughter, Gigi, played by the beautiful Elizabeth Gillies. She’s smart, she’s gorgeous, and she may be more talented than Johnny ever was. This past weekend, the cast of SDRR took San Diego Comic-Con by storm, and I was fortunate enough to chat with some of the cast on what to expect from this highly-anticipated series. Check out what they had to say.
The first video interview is with Elaine Hendrix, who plays Johnny’s long-time girlfriend, Ava, and who is still very supportive of the guy even after all the crap he’s pulled. The second interview is with Bobby Kelly and John Ales who plays Bam-Bam and Rehab (yes, I laughed out loud at those names too!), who in my opinion, next to Leary himself, are going to be the stars of the series. The duo is funny as hell, with Kelly actually being a stand-up comedian. Bam-Bam is the drummer for Johnny’s band, and unlike Corbett, who was already a professional guitarist before being cast as Flash, Kelly didn’t know the first thing about playing drums and had to learn. How exactly do you do that? Kelly joked, “Get pillows and some drumsticks.”
The series premiere of Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll airs tonight at 10/9c on FX.
