Warning: General spoilers ahead
On June 14, 2017, the Grenfell Tower fire broke out in the 24-story Grenfell Tower block of flats in North Kensington, West London, United Kingdom. It caused 72 deaths, including two who later died at the hospital. It’s a news story I don’t think I’ll ever forget, perhaps because several young children were killed in the blaze. In tomorrow’s first crossover of the season, the One Chicago franchise tackles this heart-wrenching, ripped-from-the-headlines story, and as you probably would suspect, it doesn’t disappoint. Here are the official synopses of the 3 episodes, as released by NBC:
Chicago Fire “Going To War” — In the first part of a three-show, one-night crossover event, Firehouse 51 is faced with a daunting challenge when an out-of-control blaze consumes a 25-story apartment complex, trapping victims on the top floors. Complicating the rapidly escalating situation, members soon discover that someone close to home may be one of the trapped victims.
Chicago Med “When To Let Go” — In the second part of the three-show, one-night crossover event, the doctors and nurses of Chicago Med find themselves on high alert when an overflow of patients are rushed into the doors following a terrifying apartment complex blaze. Dr. Rhodes fights to save the life of one of “Chicago Fire’s” own, while Dr. Halstead and his brother Jay struggle with their own personal battle.
Chicago P.D. “Endings” — After discovering the true cause of the high-rise fire, Intelligence races to find the man responsible. And for Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), it’s personal.
I don’t know about everyone else, but when I first learned that all 3 One Chicago series would be airing on Wednesdays this season, I have to admit I was skeptical. After all, the 3 shows had been successful while airing on different nights for several seasons, and so, why change a winning formula? Well, that opinion changed once I had screened the 3 episodes of tomorrow’s crossover. Because the 3 series are now back-to-back, the breaks are now gone, and the crossover actually feels more like a movie than a series of television shows. Truthfully, I consider it to be one of the best crossovers the franchise has done to date, and the only negative thing I can really say is a couple of scenes are very difficult to watch, primarily due to the nature of the victims. Even the jovial, seasoned firefighter Otis (Yuri Sardarov) develops a case of PTSD after witnessing it, and so, this is definitely one of the times you probably should take the “viewer discretion is advised” warning seriously.
The 3-hour One Chicago Crossover begins tomorrow at 8/7c on NBC.
