Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Last Friday, we got our first glimpse at Dark Matter, one of 3 new space thrillers premiering on Syfy this year (with The Expanse being the 3rd and set to premiere in December). The focus of this series is 6 people who wake up on spaceship with their memories wiped clean, and if you believe the small amount of data that is recovered on the ship’s computer, the group sounds like inter-galactic “cleaners” hired by the highest bidder to make problems (usually living beings) go away. Take away the memory loss and what you have left is pretty close to Killjoys.
Set in a galaxy on the brink of a bloody interplanetary class war, Killjoys follows a group of three bounty hunters. Johnny (Aaron Ashmore, Warehouse 13), D’avin (Luke Macfarlane, Brothers & Sisters) and Dutch (relative newcomer Hannah John-Kamen) are a fun loving trio who attempt to remain impartial on the war as they chase deadly warrants.
Once a criminal himself, Johnny was recruited by Dutch after she met him while working a warrant. Johnny is supposedly not that intelligent but is somewhat of a tech whiz, which comes in pretty handy on the ship. D’avin is Johnny’s older brother and is not a killjoy, at least not yet. He is actually the focus of the premiere, as Johnny risks his life to find D’avin after he learns that a kill warrant has been issued for his brother. Then, there’s Dutch, and of the three, she is the most interesting. She is a Level 5 killjoy, which means she can work kill warrants, and she’s a hell of a warrior. However, she has a dark past and one that continues to haunt and frighten her.
After having watched the first couple episodes, I’ve decided to adopt a wait-and-see attitude before making a judgement on the series. While it definitely has some great kick-ass action sequences and fight scenes, I can’t help but wonder where the show will ultimately go. Will it be completely procedural with a warrant-of-the-week or will it follow some other pattern? Of course, I’m sure the Dutch mystery will be a big part of the overall storyline, but I can’t see that going past season 1. As for the characters, I found it somewhat difficult to connect with any of them. This is in contrast to Dark Matter, where all 6 characters were very well-developed, and by the end of the first episode, you felt like you knew them. which is pretty funny considering they really don’t know much about themselves.
Bottom line — I plan on tuning in, and when people ask me, I tell them to give the show a watch. And, with a little bit of luck, the series will be well-received, thus giving Syfy a solid Friday night of space, action, murder and mystery.
The series premiere of Killjoys is titled “Bangarang” and airs Friday at 9/8c on Syfy.
