Warning: General spoilers ahead
With Chad Patterson now out of the way and a position officially open on the 40th floor, the war is on between some of Spiga Biotech’s top talent, and it’s about to get pretty damn ugly. Even though there are several potential candidates, the 2 leading ones seem to be Ben (Sean Teale) and his colleague Roger Caplan, the same sleezeball who stole Ben’s little tech gizmo he hid in the conference room in last week’s episode. Of course, I think most of us are cheering on Ben, and fortunately, he gets a big break in tonight’s episode that tilts the odds of landing the position in his favor.
While several representatives from Inazagi are visiting Spiga Biotech, Elizabeth (Julia Ormond) learns that one of them is interested in defecting. However, extracting the woman from Inazagi’s clutch proves to be extremely difficult — in fact, life-threatening — and so, Elizabeth makes a bold move and puts the issue in front of the top candidates for the open position. This is where Ben shines. He comes up with a plan just short of genius, and as an added bonus, it also provides him with some very critical information about Elena. A win-win situation all-around.
With Ben now taking the lead for the job and earning the respect of both Elizabeth and Julian, Roger Caplan is just livid. It’s getting down to the wire, and as they say, desperate times call for desperate measures. The only leverage Caplan has is that device he stole from Ben, and in an extremely risky move, he makes another trip to the Red Zone to visit someone who may be able to crack it. He’s absolutely certain that something incriminating is on it (and, he’s right, of course), and it’s his only shot at eliminating Ben from the job candidate pool. All I will say about Caplan’s excursion to the Red Zone is the guy’s desperate beyond comprehension and a tad bit crazy. What he ends up doing to get what he wants nearly made me hurl (I.E. — some really gross shit!), and it’s a clear demonstration of how bad our characters’ world is and the lengths people will go to for an advantage.
For those who are fans of other Syfy shows, you should recognize a few guest-stars. Demore Barnes (“12 Monkeys”) guests as Mason, one of the leading representatives from Inazagi, and Rob Stewart (“Killjoys”) also has a small role in tonight’s episode as one of the lead Spiga Biotech agents.
After viewing the Pilot, I must admit I wasn’t entirely sold on the show. However, after these past couple of episodes, I’m 100% on-board, and I’m very eager to see how everything plays out. Given the reality of today’s current events and a President-Elect who doesn’t believe climate change exists, the series can be depressing, as it’s a worse-case cautionary tale of the consequences of ignoring our climate and ignoring our planet for pure monetary gain. However, at the same time, through the eyes of the strong characters and the protagonists of the series, there is something we can see that I think all of us need right now — hope.
Episode 1.03 of Incorporated is titled “Human Resources” and airs tonight at 10/9c on Syfy.
