Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Less than 3 weeks, my Fannibals, and we’ll finally get the next chapter in the Hannibal saga after last May’s bloody spectacular season 2 finale. Over the past 13 months, little bits and pieces have been revealed on what direction season 3 will be taking, including the Francis Dolarhyde character from Red Dragon being introduced as well as the 1st part of the season delving into the past of Dr. Lecter and thus touching on parts of the prequel novel Hannibal Rising.
I think the big question on most of the fans’ minds is where exactly will the premiere start. Unfortunately for those who are just dying to find out the fates of their beloved characters after the bloodbath in “Mizumono,” all of those characters are MIA in the 1st episode of the season. Instead, there is a time jump, and the focus is on Hannibal and his new bride, Bedelia Du Maurier as they make a new life for themselves in Italy. What’s more, there are a few other surprises in the episode, as NBC’s official synopsis reveals:
HANNIBAL IS ON THE RUN – EDDIE IZZARD AND ZACHARY QUINTO GUEST STAR – Having successfully escaped FBI capture, Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving through the European landscape, with Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) in tow. But Dr. Lecter’s old habits and opulent tastes are still on display as he settles into a new identity and life in Florence, Italy, working at the Palazzo Capponi museum. Glimpses into the past help inform his relationship with Bedelia, a pairing not clearly defined as friend or foe.
I have already seen the episode and will be writing a detailed Advance Preview as the premiere date gets closer, but I can confirm that Eddie Izzard is back as Abel Gideon in the form of flashbacks. The one thing that the audience did not see in season 2 was what happened with Abel from the time that Hannibal kidnapped him and cut off his leg to the time when Dr. Chilton discovered his half-eaten body in his guest room. All these gaps are filled in, and I must say it’s one of the best parts of the episode.
But, don’t take my word for it. Be sure to tune in for the season 3 premiere titled “Antipasto” on June 4th at 10/9c on NBC. In the meantime, check out the below picture preview.
