Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Last week we got our first look at Will Graham after his horrific attack in last season’s finale, and tomorrow, we move on to Jack Crawford. While we don’t get to see the moments right after Jack is left bleeding out in Hannibal’s pantry, it is clear Jack survived the ordeal — but now, with a different perspective. While Will (and we will see later, Alana Bloom and Dr. Chilton as well) is still drawn to Hannibal like a moth is to a flame, Jack seems to have moved on and left his fixation/obsession with Dr. Lecter behind him. Jack now has different priorities, and tomorrow, we will see what those priorities are.
In the meantime, Will continues his relentless search for Hannibal, which leads him to the Lecter Castle in Lithuania — Hannibal’s childhood home and a place with some very bad memories. Here, we get some of Hannibal’s backstory, including what happened to his sister, Mischa, and we are introduced to a new character, Chiyoh (Tao Okamoto), the keeper of the grounds of the Castle and likely somehow connected to Lady Murasaki. For those familiar with the source material, Lady Murasaki was Hannibal’s step-aunt, and next to Will Graham, likely the only other person to have gotten close to Hannibal.
As is characteristic of this series, this is another fantastic episode but because there are several characters in play and so many moving parts, it’s easy to get confused and lose sight of the point the episode is trying to make. In case this does happen, I can tell you that the focus of the episode is on Will Graham. It’s interesting as he is exploring the Castle grounds and talking with Chiyoh, he is able to see certain things about himself that he hadn’t before. And, be sure to hang around for the last 5 seconds of the episode because what Will does in that final scene will blow you away.
Episode 3.03 of Hannibal is titled “Secondo” and airs Thursday at 10/9c on NBC.
