Warning: Spoilers Ahead
As I sit here trying to write this Preview piece, I fill a tall glass with red wine, and I swear by the night’s end, I probably I will have emptied the entire bottle. Yes, everyone, I’m that bummed out. After screening Sunday’s mid-season finale, I can say the entire hour is a total buzzkill — and it’s not just because it’s littered with carnage and death. Lines are drawn and major moral questions are raised to where by the end of the episode, you may wonder who are the real “monsters” here.
I’m not going to spoil too much here because it’s an episode that you really need to watch live, and so for now, you’ll have to live with some teasers. First, for some obvious things. As most of us suspected, Celia is pretty angry that Strand (Colman Domingo) betrayed her “son,” Thomas, and very loudly exclaims in front of everyone, “This man loved you, and he died believing your lies.” Ouch, that one hurt. She then gives Strand 1 day to give Thomas a proper burial, and then both he and the rest of the group must leave. However, don’t worry too much about our core survivors, folks, because you can count on Nick to come to the rescue! To try and smooth things over and convince Celia to allow his family to stay, Nick returns to the Abigail and brings Luis (who is now a walker) back to his mother. Well, it works because Celia is very thankful to “her Nicholas” and allows them to stay with the exception of Strand, who is eventually escorted through the main gate and off the grounds.
After the confrontation with Madison (Kim Dickens) and Alicia (Alycia Debham-Carey), Chris (Lorenzo Henrie) completely takes off, and it isn’t until the end of the next day that Travis (Cliff Curtis) is able to catch up to him. But, that’s not before Chris holds a little boy hostage and threatens to kill him. By now Travis is able to see how damaged his son is and blames only himself.
While Chris is spiraling outside of the gates, Daniel (Ruben Blades) continues to lose it inside the walls. Things have gone from bad to worse, with Daniel now being delusional, seeing and talking with this dead wife. To make matter worse, he attacks some of Celia’s men, which only lands him locked up and bound in one of the cages in the basement.
So, with everything gone completely sideways, could it possibly get any worse? Actually, yes, it gets much, much worse by the time the end of the episode rolls around. Obviously, I can’t give too much away, but I will tell you this. In the final moments of the episode, our heroes have been fractured into 3 separate groups: a group of 4, a group of 2, and a group of 1. I’ll leave it to you to ponder who is in which group. Now, for those of you paying attention, you may notice that the total is only 7 people, but 8 arrived in last week’s episode.
Yes, everyone, unfortunately we do lose someone in our group this week. It’s a very sad ending to what has proven to be a brutal first half of the season and one that I think will really shake up the fandom. So, have the liquor (and tissues!) ready come Sunday because chances are, you’ll need them.
The season 2 mid-season finale of Fear The Walking Dead is titled “Shiva” and airs Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.
