Warning: General Spoilers Ahead
After getting a glimpse at all of the characters in our scattered group in the last 2 episodes except for Travis (Cliff Curtis) and Chris (Lorenzo Hendrie), it’s no surprise that this week’s episode concentrates on the latter. It’s a tad bit annoying that we don’t get a single mention of Alejandro (Paul Calderon) and his compound, especially given last week’s big reveal that Alejandro may be the first human on either Walking Dead series to have survived a walker bite. What’s more, even though we do check in with Madison and Co. at Hotel Hell, we don’t get to see how Madison nor Strand manages to escape that mini-herd at the hotel bar. They just appear at the end of the episode with no explanation. Oh, and no sightings of Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) either. Very frustrating.
So, moving on from the things we don’t see in this episode, let’s discuss what the episode **does** reveal. The episode opens with a flashback to that wedding that had obviously been interrupted at the hotel. Elena and her nephew, Hector, who run the hotel, are working on getting vehicles to evacuate the wedding guests especially since a great deal of the them are from the U.S., and there is talk of the border being closed. Unfortunately, that never happens. The father of the bride has a heart attack at the wedding reception, dies, and before you know it, turns and infects his daughter. There’s widespread panic, and to protect the remaining guests at the hotel, Elena makes a very difficult decision — she locks the entire wedding party into the ballroom.
Returning to present day, we do see Elena again, and she shows up just in time. Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) is trying to get back downstairs to help her mother but is quickly surrounded by walkers. She tries to escape by climbing into an elevator shaft, but once the walkers clear by falling into the shaft, she can’t get back out. Fortunately, Elena appears and saves her life — but, that doesn’t mean that she trusts Alicia. It turns out that a handful of the guests Elena locked into the ballroom escaped, and now, she thinks they have taken Hector hostage out of revenge. Ultimately, Elena and Alicia decide to trust each other and work together, but it’s still a big challenge since now, they are dealing with both walkers and some very pissed-off people who want Elena’s head on a platter.
Now, on to Travis and Chris. At first, the situation looks hopeful. There are some great Travis/Chris bonding moments — including one where Travis teaches Chris how to drive — and what’s more, Chris isn’t opposed to finding an isolated place in the mountains and just live with his Dad. That quickly goes downhill. It starts when the duo makes a pit stop in a small town to find another vehicle and some supplies. Against his father’s wishes, Chris goes solo to scavenge for food and stumbles on a robbery-in-progress. He should have just run, but when the store is overrun by a large group of walkers, Chris decides to intervene. The thieves are 4 young guys, and Chris does save their leader, Branden’s, life. But, then, in the chaos, Chris grabs half their stuff and takes off.
Of course, eventually, these 4 guys catch up with Travis and Chris, but ironically, they don’t want to hurt them. Instead, they think Chris is one hell of a bad-ass, and even offers them food and water if they join their group. Given that they are thieves — and quite possibly killers — Travis doesn’t trust them, but Chris wants to join their group. These guys like Chris, they accept him. These days, acceptance is a big deal for Chris. In the end, Travis and Chris do leave with these punks, but as you probably can guess, it doesn’t end well. The episode may have started with a glimmer of hope for Chris, but it ends with Chris doing something so bad, so heartless to impress his new-found “friends” that even his own father may now see him as a lost cause.
Episode 2.10 of Fear The Walking Dead is titled “Do Not Disturb” and airs Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.
