Warning: Spoilers Ahead
If there’s one thing that I think we have all learned by watching The Walking Dead over the past 6 years it’s that people can be more of a threat than the undead. Be careful who you trust, and even more so, be careful who you piss off because they may just come back and bite you in the ass when you least expect it. This is the lesson that comes in Sunday’s new Fear The Walking Dead , and unfortunately for our group, it’s one that I don’t think they yet grasp nor understand.
The lesson comes in the form of the “familiar face” that has been teased in the episode’s synopsis and promos. At first I was going to hold back on the mystery but since so many have already guessed, I will confirm that it’s Alex (Michelle Ang) that Travis (Cliff Curtis) will be forced to confront while being held captive. And, boy, oh boy, is she pissed, as I think most of us suspected she would be. Even though you might think her anger should be more towards Strand (Colman Domingo), she’s actually a lot more upset with Travis — she remembered his face, could see that he knew what the right thing was to do but yet, he sat back and did nothing. In her eyes, that was worse than Strand cutting the rope. So, when Connor and the pirates came along, it was very easy for her to give up the Abigail. As for Jake? Sigh. Just watch the episode but also be sure to have the tissues ready!
Just like past episodes, Travis ends up doing virtually nothing in this episode since he’s being held in a jail cell per Alex’s request, and so, it’s up to the rest of the group to figure a way out of the mess they’re in. Chris (Lorenzo Henrie) kills his first human (I don’t really count the survivor from the plane crash since that was a mercy kill), and I swear he’s becoming more like Carl Grimes (in a good way!) every day. Salazar (Ruben Blades) proves he can be a great interrogator and is able to obtain some vital information out of Reed. And, Nick (Frank Dillane) has become very comfortable with firearms, to the dismay of his mother.
Oh, and if you’re a fan of The Walking Dead — in particular, the Walking Dead comics — you will love and be able to appreciate one particular scene. I never really thought the writers might steal a death scene from the original Walking Dead comics and carry it over not to The Walking Dead but to its companion series, but it appears that’s what they may have done. Taking a page from the Holly death arc in the comics, someone is killed and then, sent back to their group with a black hood over their head. Of course, shit hits the fan when that hood finally comes off!
A few more tidbits. Luis turns out to be a real asshole, and I do think there will be major issues once they reach Baja. Strand definitely will have to make a choice. Jack truly is a good guy, and my hope is he’ll find a way to break off from this band of jerks. And, Ophelia continues to be nothing more than a glorified red-shirt which makes me think she may be the next one to bite it.
Episode 2.05 of Fear The Walking Dead is titled “Captive” and airs Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.
