Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Last week’s episode was in a way bittersweet for me, especially the ending. I love how we found out (or at least got a big hint) that there may be at least one member of the Raza crew that doesn’t have a 5-foot long rap sheet. Poor One AKA “Jace Corso” AKA “Derrick Moss.” Seems like a truly nice guy who just wanted to avenge his wife’s murder. But, the punchline to the entire thing was a tough pill to swallow because I really enjoyed thinking of Three as the bad-guy-gone-good — for the short time it lasted.
In Friday’s episode, Four is up this time. Taking a page directly from Six’s playbook, he decides it’s time to face his enemies and the 2 people responsible for turning his life upside down — his brother and his step-mother, the former Empress. The episode is still a few days out, but here are a few teasers that should carry you over until Friday:
1. By the end of the episode, everybody on the Raza has come clean with everyone else about the dirty little secrets they’ve been holding back — with the exception of one person. Who do you think is the hold-out?
2. Just like Six in last week’s episode, Four takes off to confront his brother and tells no one he is leaving. At first, everybody agrees that Four abandoned them, that he does not want anyone to follow, and that they should just leave. But, one person finally steps up and gives a very insightful explanation as to why they should turn around and go back after Four. Any guesses on who that is?
3. We know how close Five and Six are, but would you believe me if I told you that Six makes Five cry in this episode? No worries — they eventually make up, but you may be surprised what Six does to upset Five so much.
4. We all know that Four didn’t kill his father, and that he was framed just so his step-mother’s son could take the Emperor’s throne instead of him. Given that, we naturally want to believe that Four, while obviously a warrior, is still a good guy. However, that is brought into serious question when he kills an unarmed man in front of One, Two, and Three.
5. Finally, be sure to hang around for the last 5 minutes, because it pretty much sets up the next 2 episodes. However, unlike the last 3 or 4 episodes, the final scenes aren’t devoted to another big character reveal. Instead, an unknown hostile party shows up, and something tells me that major trouble is brewing for the Raza crew.
After this episode, we have only 4 left in the season. Wow, where has the time gone! I spoke with Executive Producer Joe Mallozzi a couple of weeks ago on what we can expect from the 2nd half of the season, and while he couldn’t reveal any spoilers of course, here are a few teasers he could offer. “Wow, there’s so much. Episodes 8 and 9, they are more character-focused episodes where basically one character will be front-and-center, and we explore their respective backstories. They say that you really can never escape your past, and in both cases, we see our characters realizing that the lure of the past is too enticing,” as Joe explains.
“Episodes 10 and 11 are almost like a 2-parter episode, where they have to join forces with another bad-ass crew that could quite possibly be even more bad-ass than them. There’s some really great guest stars — Ennis Esmer from ‘The Listener,’ Jessica Sipos from Syfy’s ‘Ascension,’ just a very interesting group and almost the antithesis of the Raza crew. There’s a couple of shocking developments in that 2-parter which leads to episode 12, another character-centric episode where we actually delve into the backstory of one particular character. Then, finally, episode 13, the season finale, and I really can’t say much about this one except it will be pretty epic. I think once that episode airs, the messageboards and fan forums will be on fire.”
“Episode Nine” of Dark Matter airs tonight at 10/9c on Syfy.
