Based on the wildly popular comic book series “Hellblazer” from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan) is armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and a wickedly naughty wit. He fights the good fight — or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to abandon his campaign against evil until a series of events thrusts him back into the fray when an old friend’s daughter (guest star Lucy Griffiths) becomes the target of supernatural forces. Harold Perrineau and Charles Halford also star.
So far, I have not been a fan of most of the new television series this season but I am giving this one a thumbs up and a “watch” recommendation. I’ve always been a fan of the “Hellblazer” comics, the series is somewhat unique compared to the boring crap that’s been pushed in front of us lately, and with the likes of Matt Ryan and Harold Perrineau, it certainly has some good talent. Check back with me come mid-season but from what I’ve seen thus far, I’m hopeful NBC has another hit on their hands.
Constantine premieres tomorrow night at 10/9c on NBC.
MEET THE CAST
Welsh-born actor Matt Ryan stars as John Constantine, a charismatic and morally challenged detective of the occult. Ryan appeared in lead roles with Royal Shakespeare Company and Donmar Warehouse before playing Horatio in “Hamlet” opposite Jude Law in a production that transferred to Broadway. Ryan again performed on stage opposite Jude Law as Fluellen in the Michael Grandage Company production of “Henry V.”
Harold Perrineau stars as Manny, Constantine’s morally ambiguous guardian angel. Perrineau began his career as a dancer with the Alvin Ailey Company in New York City before segueing into theater, film and television. Among his many television credits, Perrineau is perhaps best known for his roles on the HBO series “Oz” and the Emmy-nominated series “Lost.”
Salt Lake City native Charles Halford stars as Chaz, Constantine’s closest friend.
Angélica Celaya stars as Zed, a psychic who has a very dark past and comes to be Constantine’s right-hand woman.
