Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Ever since the Chicago Fire/Chicago P.D. crossover last Spring that introduced us to the folks over at Chicago Med, it’s almost as if they’re already family. Heck, just a few weeks ago, Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) appeared in the Chicago Fire episode “I Walk Away” and helped Brett deal with the emotional issues arising from a newborn baby being orphaned on a recent call. And, it seems like every week now on Chicago Fire , Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) shows up even if only for a few brief moments.
That being said, it almost seems weird that we are just now getting to the series premiere of this show. It feels like it should have happened months ago, but even so, I’m just happy we’re finally getting 1 hour devoted each week to the city’s most explosive hospital and its courageous team of characters.
In the series premiere, Chicago Med is pushed to its limits as an elevated train crash brings Chicago to its knees. The emergency department’s grand opening is interrupted by an onslaught of crash victims, pushing hospital administrator Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) and her staff to their limits as they frantically work to triage and treat patients. It’s all hands on deck as newly hired trauma surgeon Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell), pregnant pediatrics specialist Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto), third-year resident Dr. Will Halstead, military-trained Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), nurse April Sexton (Yaya Dacosta) and head of psychiatry Dr. Daniel Charles must pull together to save lives. Rounding out the team is medical student Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo), who quickly learns some of the hard lessons that come with life in the Emergency Department.
And that’s not all who’s featured in the episode. There are several surprise appearances from those in our Chicago Fire family, including Hermann (David Eigenberg) and Brett (Kara Killmer). All in all, a fantastic series premiere that you definitely won’t want to miss.
The series premiere of Chicago Med is titled “Derailed” and airs Tuesday at 9/8c on NBC.
