Warning: General spoilers ahead
While most are ringing in 2017 and have big hopes for the new year, there’s not too much cheer at Firehouse 51. The show returns from its winter hiatus this week, and aside from the fact that our Tuesdays are now perfect once again, there’s very little our fire-fighting heroes have to celebrate about.
As we saw in the winter finale last month, newlyweds Dawson’s (Monica Raymund) and Casey’s (Jesse Spencer) plans of adopting Louie are thwarted when the boy’s father shows up out of the blue. They end up hiring a top-notch attorney to handle their case but are told they are facing a huge up-hill battle since a paternity test does prove this man is Louie’s biological father.
In the meantime, Severide (Taylor Kinney) begins making the preparations with Dr. Clarke (guest-star Jeff Hephner) for the bone marrow transplant and against the advice of some, decides to meet the transplant recipient, Anna. He learns she is a Pediatric Nurse from Springfield, loves the outdoors, and basically sees someone he would have liked to know and hang out with had it not been for these circumstances. Well, as Dr. Clarke had warned Kelly, the reason why it’s usually not wise for donor to meet recipient is if something goes wrong with the procedure, it could take a huge emotional toll.
And, of course, that’s exactly what happens. The preparation for the procedure causes Anna’s immune system to crash, and so, they end up having to cancel, leaving Severide heartbroken and in complete shock. It all culminates with Kelly drowning his sorrows away at the bottom of a bottle and his classic Mustang being involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident that kills a 10 year-old girl. But, with all evidence pointing to Severide and Kelly claiming he can’t remember what happened, will his friends and colleagues believe and stand by him?
This is Part 1 of the 2-part Chicago Fire/Chicago P.D. crossover, and be sure to check back with the site for a Preview of the exciting conclusion of the event.
Episode 5.09 of Chicago Fire is titled “Some Make It, Some Don’t” and airs Tuesday at 9/8c on NBC.
