Warning: Spoilers Ahead

Holy bat balls! This is the best way to describe the season 4 premiere of Bates Motel , and it’s coming from someone who screened the episode hours ago. Seriously, my hands are still shaking. Up until the season 3 finale, this show has been somewhat of a slow burn. Norman (Freddie Highmore) was slowly progressing into madness, but it was subtle enough not to freak anyone (including Norma) out. Well, now is the time to freak out — for the viewers, for Norma (Vera Farmiga), and for anyone who has even the remotest contact with Norman Bates. This is when we get to see Norman finally start to unravel and at an alarming rate, with Norma now desperately trying to get him help. Unfortunately, I have a feeling her efforts may come way too late.

I really don’t want to spill much about this fantastic premiere, because you really need to watch yourselves and experience the same shock that I did. But, here are a few teasers to hold you over for the next 24 hours:

• As you can probably guess from the title of the episode, Norman is eventually found roaming, talking to himself, and basically acting crazy as a loon. This results in his being admitted to the county hospital psychiatric ward on a 48-hour hold, which doesn’t set well with Norma at all. She wants to take Norman home. They won’t let her. She wants to see Norman. They won’t let her. And, the head psychiatrist nearly cuts her a new one for not getting treatment for Norman even though he has had multiple blackouts. Not a good day for Norma, and it only gets worse.
• Emma (Olivia Cooke) is set to have her lung transplant, and Dylan (Max Thieriot) is there right by her side, leaving his mother to deal with Norman alone. Unfortunately, the surgery also causes Emma’s mother to show up unexpectedly, which causes nothing but problems.
• There are several “Holy crap!” scenes in the episode, and the opening sequence is one of them. From what we can tell, it’s a scene from the future, and it shows Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) doing some seriously crazy sh*t. Basically, he’s cleaning up another one of Norma’s messes, and the first thing that comes to mind is “Dude, the pussy ain’t worth it!”
• Later in the episode, Norma actually asks Romero to marry her. Yes, you read that right, and you’re not hallucinating. But, it’s not because Norma realizes Romero is the love of her life. Hold on to your knickers, because just wait til you find out the reason behind her surprise proposal. Thankfully, Romero says “No.”
• The final scene — what can I say? It’s some serious bonker balls crap. It comes out of nowhere, and trust me, it will scare you half to death. I actually had just poured myself some bourbon and ended up spilling it all over my lap. It’s that intense, folks, and so, buckle up tight!

The season 4 premiere of Bates Motel  is titled “A Danger To Himself And Others” and airs Monday at 9/8c on A&E.
