Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Even though destroying the virus in last week’s episode didn’t stop the plague, not all was lost with strong hints dropped that the year 1944 may be key in derailing the Monkeys’ plan once and for all. Well, no time is wasted (no pun intended!) with Cassie (Amanda Schull) and Cole’s (Aaron Stanford) next stop being the Emerson Hotel in September of 1944.
Cole had suspected that the Messengers had gone back to 1944, and even though Dr. Railly is more preoccupied these days crushing on Deacon (Todd Stashwick) instead of having any faith in Cole’s abilities, he turns out to be right. Also, thanks to Ramsey (Kirk Acevedo), who proves that he’s not purposely withholding information like both Cassie and Deacon believe, is able to pinpoint the event Dr. Railly and Cole are attending in the black and white photo — an award ceremony for war heroes to be held at Columbia University. And, the presumed target is a Dr. Thomas Crawford, a molecular biologist who has done a great deal of research on the feasibility of bio-weapons.
After arriving in 1944 and under the ruse of being married (the Emerson Hotel refuses to book a couple unless they are married), Dr. Railly immediately spots 2 of the Messengers — a male and a female (Scottie Thompson, “NCIS”). But, what could they possibly want with Dr. Crawford? His research is so dated that it would be completely irrelevant to modern-day science. As it turns out, it’s not Dr. Crawford who’s their true target but his son, Thomas Jr. And, Thomas isn’t a scientist like his father but a very disturbed young man, with diagnoses of paranoid schizophrenia among others and currently residing in the Mission Cross Mental Asylum. Getting a feeling of deja vu? Yep, me too.
If you thought Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire) and her ties to the 12 Monkeys were confusing enough, just you wait. Thomas and these events in 1944 add a whole new dimension to everything, and I don’t think it’s something anybody could have foreseen. And, now for the big question — so what happens? Do the Messengers succeed in their mission? Come on, folks, I can’t tell you everything! You’ll just have to watch to get the answer to that question, but I will say that Jones, Deacon, Ramsey and everyone else back in 2044 had better buckle down because it seems your time is about to get another jolt.
Episode 2.03 of 12 Monkeys is titled “One Hundred Years” and airs Monday at 9/8c on Syfy.
