Warning: General spoilers ahead
Truth be told here, while everyone’s favorite character on 12 Monkeys seems to be Cole or Cassie or even Jennifer, my favorite has always been Dr. Jones (Barbara Sukowa) and with Deacon (Todd Stashwick) coming in at a close 2nd. So, when the temporal storms overtake the facility in “Resurrection” and eventually Dr. Jones, I cried like a teenage girl. No, no, no!! They can’t kill Dr. Jones! She’s the science behind the show and without her and the time machine, the story is pretty much over, right?
Well, after regaining my composure, I finally realized what creator Terry Matalas explained in recent interviews — if Cole (Aaron Stanford) manages to stop the final Paradox in 1957 or alternately, Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) makes it to Titan and kills the Witness, then time should reverse and Dr. Jones will never have been killed. That’s the focus of this week’s season 2 penultimate episode, with half of the time devoted to Cole and Cassie (Amanda Schull) in search of the Primary in 1957 and the other half focusing on Ramse and Co. in their quest for Titan and the Witness.
Since all signs have pointed to Titan being a really bad idea since day 1, things don’t look too good for Team Ramse. Alternately back in 1957, Cassie and Cole have just as many complications with no leads on the Primary and time running short. On a more positive note, there are 2 major reveals that I believe will leave the fans very pleased. First, the old white house that Cassie sees in her vision while Olivia is chanting her red forest mantra is finally explained. Second, and more importantly, Cole and Cassie confront their feelings, which is something the shipper camp has been rooting for since season 1. But, trust me, coming from someone who has already screened next week’s finale, Cole and Cassie getting all lovey-dovey doesn’t mean it will all lead to roses.
The episode is essentially the first of a 2-hour season finale, and so, that should tell you big reveals, big cliffhanger, and a big ball of shattered nerves as we have to wait a full week for our characters’ final “hurrah” in their bid to save humanity.
The season 2 penultimate episode of 12 Monkeys is titled “Blood Washed Away” and airs Monday at 9/8c on Syfy.
