Warning: Spoilers Ahead
While last week’s episode was pretty much a full hour of non-stop action, Sunday’s installment takes it down a notch as the group approaches Baja and heads for Thomas Abigail’s mansion in the hills that will hopefully prove to be the refuge that they had been promised. The good news is the group does make it across the border even with Luis having payment for only 2 people. Even better news is it **is** everything they had imagined — rolling hills, isolated, fortified, crops of food, electricity, and even servants. Heck, even before the apocalypse, this is much better than most of the group had lived.
However, with something this good, there is almost always a downside, and in this case, there most definitely is. At the top of the list is Luis’ mother, Celia. This is drilled home after the opening sequence which takes place at a Catholic Church in Mexico. The priest gives a very inspirational sermon, urging the people to fight against this evil that is upon us. However, once they begin Holy Communion, we see that everything isn’t as benevolent as it may seem. In a matter of just minutes, people begin getting sick with blood dripping from their eyes, and it is then we realize that the priest had gone completely Jonestown and taken out his entire congregation, and used the Communion wafers no less! However, as we learn later in the episode, this probably wasn’t the priest’s idea but was likely the doing of Celia . Her belief is that the walkers aren’t really dead but are “what comes next” — perhaps some kind of elevated human beings? Who knows. So, dying in this life and becoming one of them isn’t really dying in her eyes. Yes, I know, Coo-Coo for Cocoa Puffs for sure!
To this same end, she also doesn’t believe in “putting down” the undead, because according to her beliefs, they aren’t really dead. So, instead, she pulls a Hershel Greene and keeps them caged up in the main house’s basement. And, just like Patricia of The Walking Dead having the grim chore of killing chickens and feeding them to the undead, it is up to the people living at the main house to find live bait — including children’s pet dogs — to feed the ever-growing number of walkers.
This is also the episode where some characters really start to come unhinged. Daniel (Ruben Blades) has begun to lose his way after his wife’s death, and Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) knows not what to do but trust in God and pray (and with Nick keeping her company. How sweet!). As a example, he is almost killed and had to be saved by Ofelia when faced with having to put down one of the alter boys from the church massacre. Apparently, the boy reminded him of another young boy from his past that he had to kill. However, the one person that, in my opinion, is really starting to lose it is Chris (Lorenzo Henrie). Ever since “We All Fall Down,” I had always envisioned Chris becoming this bad-ass killing machine. And, perhaps the killing is what’s making him grow more unstable, but man, he’s really starting to scare and give me flashbacks of Lizzie Samuels from The Walking Dead. The final scene of the episode is particularly disturbing when Chris goes into the room where Madison (Kim Dickens) and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) are sleeping. He picks up a knife from their nightstand but is then interrupted by a gunshot from somewhere else in the house. The big question is what was he going to do had Madison not woke up and stopped him? Kill Alicia, Madison or both? You can bet this will be a big part of next week’s mid-season finale since Madison had already jumped Travis’ shit about Chris’ behavior before this even happened.
So, now with all of this said, what about any character deaths? Come on, folks, I’ve given you some pretty good teasers, but I’m not going to be a spoiler of death scenes on this show. Sorry! So, you’re just gonna have to wait and watch on Sunday. Here’s a hint, though: One particular character may be inconsolable in 6 months when he/she learns that amputation of a limb can save a person’s life after being bitten.
Episode 2.06 of Fear The Walking Dead is titled “Sircut Cervus” and airs Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.
