Warning: Spoilers Ahead
In this week’s season 4 penultimate episode, truck and squad are called to the scene of a building collapse that has trapped more than a dozen victims inside of the rubble. With the structure ready to give way and not much time to react, Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) faces a difficult decision with life-and-death ramifications. In her quest to foster Louie, Dawson (Monica Raymund) throws all her energies into the bureaucratic process necessary to make it happen, but it is the helping hand of a familiar face that gives her a fighting chance. Currently on medical leave, Otis (Yuri Sardarov) swings by the firehouse and meets his temporary replacement, hoping it is just that but fearing the worst.
In the meantime, Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Kidd (guest star Miranda Rae Mayo) continue to see each other outside of the firehouse, and Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Antonio (guest star Jon Seda) find themselves at odds and tensions flare.
Okay, folks, this was the official synopsis from NBC. However, I have a few possible spoilery tidbits, and so, if you want to remain spoiler-free, stop reading now. First, I haven’t published the promotional photos for the season 4 finale, but I did view them this morning and they show everyone in Firehouse 51 in their blues. That can only mean 1 thing — either a cop or firefighter likely dies in the above-mentioned building collapse. Second, over the past week or so, NBC has changed this synopsis, and the original wording made mention of Jimmy (Steven McQueen) being at odds with Chief Boden after a decision that leads to “the death of someone that Borelli loved.” Yikes! Now, this could very well have been a mistake by NBC, but given the fact that the finale promotional photos support someone dying, my guess is NBC ultimately decided it was too spoilery and removed it.
This being said, who do I think will die in tonight’s episode? If it is truly someone Jimmy loves, 2 possibilities come to mind. First, and foremost, is his brother who is also a firefighter. The formal CFD funeral definitely supports this. A second possibility is Chili (Dora Madison). I don’t necessarily know if “love” is the right word to use, but Jimmy definitely had feelings for her. As for everyone being in their blues, it could be that they decide to give her a funeral with full honors since she is a former paramedic.
Either way, it sounds like a very intense episode. We’ve been fortunate and have gone the entire season without a death. So, something like this — however painful — is definitely overdue.
The season 4 penultimate episode of Chicago Fire is titled “When the Collapse Started” and airs tonight at 10/9c on NBC.
