Is everyone still freaked from last week’s church house bloodbath? For those who are familiar with the comic book series, you knew this was coming, but for those who are comic virgins, it had to be a shocker. Just moments after Bob (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.), Gareth (Andrew West), and the rest were dead and buried, the episode didn’t take long to shift gears and focus the attention on Beth (Emily Kinney). We know Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) left to chase the speeding black car with the white cross, but who does Daryl return with in that final scene? Carol? Or could it actually be Beth?
The timing of the next episode couldn’t have been more perfect. Given that the Termites are officially gone, it stands to reason that another group will be introduced. Rick’s team encounters a “whole group of other survivors, but what looks safe and nice on the outside has a bit of a dark side.”
As we will find out, this “whole group of other survivors” is the one Beth now finds herself with. We have not seen her since she was abducted and taken from Daryl during the season four episode, “Alone.” The person who kidnapped her at the time was driving off with a car that contained the same cross sign as the one Carol and Daryl noticed in “Strangers.” In fact, the car the two of them were pursuing appear to have been coming from the vicinity of the church, though it was not made perfectly clear. This has led some viewers to suspect that Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) might know about the group that took Beth. It could even be a possibility that whoever is with Daryl now knows Gabriel as well. But, of course this is just speculation and we’ll just have to wait and see.
Among other things that happens in this episode several new characters are introduced. One is Tyler James Williams who plays Noah, someone Beth meets after being taken to the hospital facility and who quickly becomes a friend and an ally. Another is the female officer, Dawn Lerner, whom we saw for the first time in the Comic-Con Trailer back in July and who is portrayed by Christine Woods. There is also one other main character we’ll see at the very end of the episode, but we’ll leave that one as a surprise for you.
Episode 5.04 of The Walking Dead is titled “Slabtown” and airs Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.
