Warning: Spoilers Ahead
The response to Fear The Walking Dead has been a mixed bag ever since it premiered last year. Some love it, while some believe the show isn’t even in the same league as the mothership. Regardless of the opinion that any of us may have about the series, I do have to say that the idea of the Flight 462 webisodes and their integration into the show’s main arc was just brilliant. Even if you sing the praises of The Walking Dead all day long, you can’t really say that the writers of that show have done anything this original and unique. So, for that alone, the series does get some high marks from me, with this episode in particular.
In Sunday’s episode, we finally get to see the aftermath of the crash of Flight 462 when our group of survivors decide to explore a nearby island after seeing strung luggage along the shoreline. First, the million dollar question — who survives the crash? Well, we can see from the below promo that the Asian girl, Alex (who had previously been called Charlie), and the young boy, Jake, survive, although Jake is very badly burned. However, what you don’t see in the promo is several other people who also make it out alive — 3 more who are originally in the lifeboat with Alex and Jake, and then a couple of others that are found in a large part of the wreckage later in the episode. Will they all make it to the end of the episode? Unfortunately not, but then again, the only person in the group who has a clue what is going on and what they’re facing is Alex, and so, really, those other poor schmucks don’t really stand a chance from the get-go.
While Nick, Alicia, Salazar, and Chris are scavenging the plane’s wreckage, trouble is brewing (literally!) on the Abigail. The boat stops running, and when Travis goes to investigate underneath, he finds a walker has been sucked into the pipes of the Abigail’s filtration system. In order to get everything running again, he has to flush all of that disgusting gunk out. Ewwww. An extremely unpleasant task, and one which Travis takes on willingly, even while Strand is being an asshole and whining like a spoiled brat because his toy stopped working. BTW, pay particular attention to the walker that Travis finds trapped in the pipes because you should recognize him from the episode’s opening scene.
So, what about Strand? Do we find out anything at all in this episode? Well, after Madison is appointed as their “spokesperson” by Salazar, she does have a good talk with Strand, where he admits they are, in fact, going to Baja, California because he has a house there — one that’s well-stocked, fortified, and has it’s own water-filtration system. Travis laughs and calls it Strand’s “magic house,” implying he doesn’t believe much of what comes out of the guy’s mouth, and honestly, I don’t trust him either. Something stinks on that boat, and it’s not the walker goo that is pumping through the pipes.
And, speaking of Strand, the episode ends with the man doing something so despicable, so heartless that I swear most of the fans will probably hate him after this episode. Yes, folks, IMO, it’s that bad and truthfully, I would have punched him if he were standing here right now (yes, yes, yes, everyone it is related to Jake, but no, he doesn’t kill him — at least not directly). The only question is will Madison, Travis and the others just sit back and watch while Strand acts like a ruthless dictator, or will one of them finally grow a set and stand up to him.
Episode 4.03 of Fear The Walking Dead is titled “Ouroboros” and airs Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.
