Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Wow. I just screened this week’s episode of The Whispers, and boy, what a total buzzkill. Last week, out of spite, revenge or just plain meanness, Drill took Lena’s life and left Wes a widower and Minx without a mother. This week, it gets worse — much, much worse — and with more bodies piling up.
As we may recall from the last episode, Henry wasn’t feeling very well, and Sean even took him to the hospital to get checked out. As it turns out, Henry’s symptoms were actually just the beginning of a widespread “epidemic” among the children that Drill has been in contact with. And, before you know it, all ERs of the local hospitals are full of children showing the same symptoms. After Dr. Benevidez examines each child, she is finally able to isolate an anomaly in the brain of every child that has been affected. It’s kind of a “mark” that Drill makes after he initiates contact with a child. While Drill is strong, the anomaly is benign, but now that Drill has gotten weaker, the malady is making the children sick.
However, just like last week, Wes has a plan to save the children — isolate all of them in an electricity-free zone thus making it impossible for Drill to hurt the children any further. Basically, initiate a quarantine, and that quarantine includes *all* children whom Drill has talked to, including Minx, Henry, Harper, and even the President’s daughter. But, we know that Drill is very smart and also very vengeful, and so, you can bet such a move won’t come without a price.
And, it doesn’t. We lose yet another major character this week, and as if it couldn’t get any worse, Drill becomes desperate and makes the move everyone was hoping he wouldn’t resort to — possess a child. It is discovered that one of the children taken into quarantine has been possessed, and yes, folks, we know by the end of the episode who that child is and effectively, who Drill is. And, believe me, it’s a tear-jerker, so be sure to have your tissues handy.
So, now that they have Drill trapped, what will the President order? He couldn’t bring himself to order the one boy killed last week after Drill occupied his body, but now that Drill has started to take the offensive and killing people, will he change his mind and sacrifice one to save the many?
Episode 1.11 of The Whispers is titled “Homesick” and airs Monday at 10/9c on ABC.
