Warning: General spoilers ahead
For the past couple of months, it has been teased that in the back half of season 2 of Chicago Med, we were going to lose a recurring character. Since then, there have been polls, there have been bets, but with no single character standing out as the one who would draw the short straw. Then, the below synopsis for tomorrow’s episode was finally released, and this description definitely narrowed the pool:
A STAFF MEMBER’S SUICIDE LEAVES THE DOCTORS AND NURSES SHAKEN – Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) and Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) face off over how to treat a patient with stroke symptoms while Dr. Manning (Torrey DeVitto) treats a young boy who fell in the river and watches the family turmoil unfold. Meanwhile, Dr. Rhodes (Collin Donnell) examines the man who saved Dr. Manning’s patient and emphasizes the importance of learning from your mistakes to Dr. Reese (Rachel DiPillo).
Of course, the 1 character that comes to come given that we now know it’s a suicide is Jason Wheeler (Jurgen Hooper). That poor guy has been a walking train wreck since the first day we met him. Mistake after mistake. Being caught drinking on the job. Asking Reese for prescription drugs. And, then, last week, asking Reese about the free therapy the hospital offers to its staff members. All of this points to Wheeler.
This is reinforced even more with the below Promo released by NBC which shows Wheeler on the roof of the hospital, and then, the Promotional Photos which depict the hospital staff leaving flowers in the area in front of the hospital, and if you look closely, the concrete appears to be blood-stained. Ewww. So, the big question is whether NBC spoiled their own spoiler by releasing all of this information, or whether there’s going to be a twist and they’re only misleading us?
First, I do think it’s Wheeler who’s suicidal. Unless some other staff member is suffering from major depression that we don’t know about, Wheeler is the only character that would make sense. However, if it’s not Wheeler’s blood on the pavement, the only other possibility I can think of is someone who tries to stop Wheeler ends up going over the edge instead (or possibly both of them). And, given all of the characters we see at the makeshift Memorial in the below photos, there’s only a few it could be. Stohl, Latham, Abrams, Noah Sexton, Robyn Charles and Sarah’s boyfriend, Joey.
So, what does everyone else think? Will Wheeler be the one we lose tomorrow, or is NBC just playing us and we should expect a big twist at the very last minute? Regardless of the outcome, we can be sure that the event will impact everyone at Chicago Med tremendously, as well as all of the loyal fans.
Episode 2.17 of Chicago Med is titled “Monday Mourning” and airs Thursday at 9/8c on NBC.
