Warning: General spoilers ahead

After a jaw-dropping ending to the first hour of the #OneChicago crossover, we go right into the 2nd installment of the event to see if time’s up for Lt. Severide (Taylor Kinney)  at Firehouse 51. With his crumbled Mustang found at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run and Severide found at his apartment passed out with a nasty cut on his forehead, things definitely don’t look good for the fan-favorite firefighter.

It also doesn’t help that a good deal of the Intelligence Unit appears to be stacked against Severide. With Antonio Dawson out, Lindsay (Sophia Bush)  is pretty much the only one left who gives Kelly the benefit of the doubt. And, while she claims that the fact she dated Severide “for like a minute” isn’t impacting her judgement, Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer)  isn’t quite so sure. Will Jay prove to be the voice of reason, or is he just letting his jealous side seep through?

In the meantime, it’s Burgess’ (Marina Squerciati)  first day in the Intelligence Unit, and with the big Severide case thrown in everyone’s laps, it’s sink-or-swim for the newbie. Fortunately, there’s no awkward Ruzek moments (yet), but her being paired with Olinsky (Elias Koteas)  proves to be just as trying. Olinsky isn’t too happy about his new partner and goes so far as to ask Voight (Jason Beghe)  to have her re-assigned. But, nope, Voight has a reason for everything he does and stands by his decision.

But, no worries because Burgess proves herself to be quite valuable. With the D.A. giving Voight 24 hours to come up with evidence of Severide’s innocence, the Unit has to look at people who may have had a grudge against Kelly, possibly car theft rings, or any other angle that may provide an alternate explanation of events. And, while Burgess may be green and have a lot to learn, she’s a quick study and ends up providing crucial information that blows the case right open.

Episode 4.09 of Chicago P.D.  is titled “Don’t Bury This Case” and airs Tuesday at 10/9c on NBC.
