Warning: General spoilers ahead
Besides a professional Z-Whacker, we’ve seen many sides of Addy Carver this season on Z Nation. A debate moderator for 2 very unlikely Presidential candidates in “Election Day.” An “Aunt Addy” and hide-and-seek playmate for Miss Lucy in “They Grow Up So Quickly.” However, tomorrow in the series’ season 3 penultimate episode, you’re going to see Addy like you never have before. A total bad-ass who will stop at absolutely nothing to protect a child who may hold the key to saving humanity. And, I mean **nothing**.
Last week’s episode ended with Addy closing in on The Man (Joseph Gatt) thanks in part to Lucy’s quick thinking, and tomorrow, she finally catches up to the bald brute. We’ve seen how tough and fearless The Man can be, and so, should our Addy be afraid? Umm, no, and in fact, after screening the episode, I can tell you that it’s actually the other way around. While Addy may not be Lucy’s mother, the devotion and the drive to protect are just as strong. Bottom line, if you see Addy Carver coming your way and she’s got that same crazed look on her face that we saw last week, I have only 1 word of advice for you — RUN!
I was fortunate enough to be able to chat with actress Anastasia Baranova earlier this week where she discussed Addy’s big moment, preparing for the episode, and what we should expect from the standoff with The Man. Check out what she had to say, as well as as the below Sneak Peek clip. This is Part 1 of the interview, with the 2nd installment to be published in next week’s Preview of the season 3 finale. In the meantime, be sure to tune in tomorrow to see this epic battle play out. 9/8c on Syfy!
TV GEEK TALK: First, a big congrats on getting a Season 4! Yeah, I never really doubted it, but it was sure nice to seeing it being official. Also, with Addy hot on the trail of The Man, it looks like your character has a big episode coming up this week. What you can tease about the episode and your upcoming arc?
Anastasia Baranova: “Well, what has been happening is we have established who The Man is, and we have established what he is about. He basically goes and does the thing that no one wants to do. Lucy is on his list, and he’s been tracking her, and the last I think we saw is he got her. He knocked Addy out, and we see Addy on a bike like, ‘Okay, I’m going to find you.’ But, I think it’s a pretty incredible concept, as a sidenote. It’s the apocalypse, there’s no nothing, and so, I’m just gonna hunt you down. I don’t know how, but I’m gonna find you. So, Addy sort of goes after him, and they finally meet up. Shooting it was super, super-intense. It’s a lot of fighting, a lot of stunts, it’s an episode with a lot of action. I’m really excited to see how it all comes together. I don’t know about making comparisons, but it’s Batman vs. Superman maybe? I don’t know, but it’s going to be a great little battle.”
TV GEEK TALK: I think the official synopsis of Friday’s episode is “Addy is being pummeled with whatever The Man can throw at her, while Lucy does the same to The Man.” When I read that, I immediately thought of the hilarious battle-of-wills between Lucy and The Man a couple of weeks ago. “Are we there yet? Why is your head so shiny?” Oh man, I laughed so hard! Should we expect more of this comedic banter between the 2 in the upcoming episode?
Anastasia Baranova: “You know, I’m trying to think, but I believe it’s one of our more darker episodes, but it’s definitely more serious. It’s sort of where we went with The Election episode but not as dark as the Red Hand and Vasquez story. And, it’s the 2nd to the last episode, and so, we’re turning the pressure up and leading up to a pretty epic end to the season. But, you know, Addy might get a few jokes off, just kind of slip them in. Yeah, there may be a couple of jokes, but mostly, it’ll be a lot of fighting. It will be more of like ‘Ooooooh! Aaaahh! Oh my God! Oh God! What’s happening! Get up! Wake up!’ One of those.”
TV GEEK TALK: Did you have to do anything special to prepare for this episode?
Anastasia Baranova: “Yes, this one was quite a bit more. Yeah, I knew it was coming, and all season long it was talked about as Addy’s revenant episode. The idea being that thing after thing after thing keeps trying to knock her down, and I knew [the episode] was going to be more physical than they usually are. The way we filmed this year, we kind of got breaks, and we were sort of isolated. So, I would fly back to L.A. and train and then, go back to Washington. The show requires quite a bit of endurance, and whoa, we close out the season with rock-climbing and stuff. And, I’m like, ‘Wow, guys, I really don’t do this stuff.'”
TV GEEK TALK: We know that little Lucy ages when she gets excited or is under stress. And, of course, being kidnapped by a bald psychopath has to be stressful. How old should we expect Lucy to be once you finally catch up with The Man?
Anastasia Baranova: “The last time we saw Lucy, The Man takes [the hood] off, and she’s grown. So, we start with that Lucy, and I think it’s like Stage 2. And, then, she just rapidly grows over the next 2 episodes.”
TV GEEK TALK: So, do we get yet another new actress in Friday’s episode?
Anastasia Baranova: “Yeah, I do believe we do.”
TV GEEK TALK: Your character definitely has a bond with little Lucy, and she likes Addy as well. Calls her “Aunt Addy” and everything. So cute! Could you talk some about where Addy’s loyalties lie? Are they with protecting the little girl, or are they still with the mission? Much like the question Warren had in the last episode.
Anastasia Baranova: “You know, I think for her, there isn’t that distinction. Family has always been the mission. What we have now is all we have left, and that is family. The only hope we have is in the people that are still left here. It’s not really one or the other for her. I think their relationship is so cute because [Addy] really was there throughout the beginning. Because she was there for her birth, it really is like she’s her niece. There’s definitely protecting her as a being, but then, at the same time, there’s protecting the even bigger scheme of things. Murphy is God-knows where doing God-knows what, and so, if we want to stay on this mission we’ve been on for 3 years, I’ve got to protect her.”
TV GEEK TALK: In the last episode, Warren and Murphy also take off to find Lucy after they learn from Citizen Z that The Man has her. Then, of course, we have Doc coming your way on his poor little bicycle. Should we be expecting a reunion of our characters this Friday?
Anastasia Baranova: “Oh, that is so cute, Doc on a bike. But, your question, aaaahhhhh. All I’ll say is you’ll have to tune in. It’ll be fun to see how it all unfolds.”
