Warning: General spoilers ahead

After talking with actress Melanie Liburd  at San Diego Comic-Con a couple of weeks ago, we’ve known that a Nyx-centric episode was coming very soon. Well, that time has finally arrived with this week’s episode revealing not just a few breadcrumbs of Nyx’s backstory, but instead, the entire mother load.

Determined to learn the significance of the key that Ferrous Corp wants so badly but also very low on funds, the crew of the Raza has to think of a way fast to raise some quick cash. As a potential solution to their problem, Nyx offers up the freighter ship she was on before being picked up and sent to Hyperion-8. It supposedly is loaded with a hallucinogenic drug called “Shadow” that has a very high street value — perfect for solving the Raza’s cash flow crisis. The catch is Nyx actually uses this as a ruse to get the Raza crew to help her rescue her little brother, Milo (Mpho Koaho, “Falling Skies”), who is currently being held prisoner on the ship. While her intentions are admirable, Nyx’s deception puts Two (Melissa O’Neil)  in a very compromising position, causing her to make many split-second decisions, any of which could have catastrophic consequences should she make the wrong call.

And, it doesn’t end with Two. Each person on board the Raza is affected by Nyx’s decision in some way. Of course, as would be expected, Devon’s (Shaun Sipos) addiction issues raise it’s ugly head again when the cases of drugs are brought aboard the Raza. It’s a little too much for any addict to resist, and unfortunately, Five may also be onto him and his bad habit. Two members of the crew are stranded on a planet after trying to deliver the load of Shadow to a drug dealer. Another crew member gets a very disturbing, ominous warning of things to come, which I’m sure will serve as a hint to the storylines that will be explored in the back half of the season. And, just like we have come to expect with this show, the episode ends with a cliffhanger, and one related to, yet, another member of the Raza crew. It literally comes in the final seconds of the episode, and so, be sure to watch until the very end.

As you probably suspect, this is a big episode for Nyx, and Melanie Liburd gives a stellar, yet emotionally-powerful, performance of a sister desperate to keep a long-standing promise she made to her brother. It will also give fans a whole new perspective on Nyx as we get an intimate view into her very troubled past. Liburd has been a standout since her first appearance in the season-opener, but this episode really allows her to shine.
