I don’t cover The Vampire Diaries , but even I knew that when Ian Somerhalder dropped the bomb on fans yesterday at Walker Stalker Con Nashville that the series will be ending with the next season, it would be a shock that would be felt around this passionate fandom. And, it most certainly was.
Yes, everyone, that nasty rumor that began yesterday is true, unfortunately. Ian Somerhalder appeared at Walker Stalker Con on Sunday and told fans during a panel that The Vampire Diaries will end with season eight. He said, “We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice.” The CW hasn’t announced anything official, but given that Nina Dobrev departed last season and that Kat Graham said she’s leaving with season eight, maybe it’s time. I always hate seeing shows go, especially those that have such a large, loyal fanbase, but sometimes it’s better to allow a series to end on its own terms.
This announcement comes on the heels of news of several other legendary TV series coming to an end. A while back it was announced that the current season of The Good Wife would be its last, and a few weeks ago, FOX broke the news that their veteran series, Bones, would be concluding with a 12-episode final season. And, CBS officially cancelled Person of Interest just recently even though most fans saw the writing on the wall before it happened.
