The Walking Dead alum Chad Coleman has been cast in the new series The Expanse — an epic space drama from Syfy and Alcon TV based on the international best-selling book series of the same name — according to Variety.
The new Syfy drama is a 10-episode thriller set two hundred years in the future, after mankind has colonized the solar system. A hardened detective (Thomas Jane, Hung) and a rogue ship’s captain (Steven Strait, Magic City) come together for what starts as the case of a missing young woman and evolves into a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history. Coleman will play Fred Johnson, a former Marine caught in a power struggle between Earth and Mars.
Chad Coleman currently plays Tyreese Goldstein on AMC’s smash hit The Walking Dead. What this means for his character, only time will tell. Some actors are able to hold down roles on more than more series. As a good example, Raul Esparza currently portrays ADA Barba on Law & Order: SVU, and this past summer it was announced he would also be returning to NBC’s Hannibal to reprise his role as Dr. Frederick Chilton. However, some actors cannot or chose not to do this. Just recently Law & Order: SVU had to sideline the character Lt. Declan Murphy played by Donal Logue due to the actor’s obligations on the new FOX drama Gotham.
It should be mentioned that even before this announcement, there had been widespread speculation that Coleman’s character, Tyreese, would not make it to the end of season 5 of The Walking Dead alive. Coleman has not been seen on the set since right after the filming of the mid-season finale, leaving viewers suspecting that Tyreese dies in the mid-season finale or shortly after. The mid-season finale of The Walking Dead airs on November 30th, with it returning for the second half of season 5 in February 2015.
Currently shooting in Toronto, Canada, The Expanse will premiere on Syfy in 2015.
