After months of simply stating the season 2 premiere of The Strain would be somewhere in the July timeframe, FX has finally set an official date of July 12th. This is almost a year-to-date after the series premiere last year, but a couple of weeks later — and these few weeks may turn out to be quite important.
July 12th is actually the Sunday of the weekend of San Diego Comic-Con, which last year was a huge venue to introduce science fiction and horror fans to Guillerme del Toro’s very unique world of vampires whom he termed the “strigoi.” Given that the freshman series was such a huge hit last year at SDCC, filling Hall H on the Sunday afternoon and final day of the event, it seems that FX may have decided to capitalize on the exposure and have set the season 2 premiere for that Sunday night.
Going into season 2, several changes for the series had already been announced earlier this year. These include Max Charles replacing Ben Hyland as Zach Goodweather and Joaquin Cosio portraying the luchador and fan-favorite from the novels, Angel de la Plata.
Besides this and as yet to be confirmed, the “hooded strigoi” that Chuck Hogan referred to last year at SDCC as Mr. Quinlan (and played by the immensely talented Stephen McHattie) is rumored to be re-invented as another character for season 2, with the “real” Mr. Quinlan to be revealed mid-season. If this is true, it has yet to be announced who has been cast as the true Quinlan.
I will be onsite for TV Geek Talk at San Diego Comic-Con in July, and so be sure to check back then for all the latest news on the series and what to expect in the new season.
In the meantime, check out the below season 2 trailer:
