Warning: Spoilers ahead for those who have not seen the season 1 finale
Oh yes they did, folks, unfortunately. The entire 2nd hour of the season 1 finale of Dark Matter we knew we had a traitor in the midst, and as the crew of the Raza started dropping like flies, suspicion began bouncing around from one person to another. First, it had to be Three, because regardless of how much we’ve learned about his being such a great guy underneath that rugged exterior, he still allegedly killed One’s wife. Then, the finger-pointing shifted to Two, and even Five was duped into believing the ship’s only genetically-engineered member of its crew was the mole. Then, on to One, because, hey, he’s the only impostor on the ship, and even if the Galactic Authority caught him, a simple DNA scan would reveal he’s not Jace Corso. So, turn everyone in and claim the bounty on the rest of the crew — sounds like a plan. And, around and round we went until that final moment when the Galactic Authority stormed the Raza and hauled each of the crew out in handcuffs and restraints. Well, all but one. In that defining moment as everyone exited the ship, one by one each crew member emerged, and the only one ultimately not bound was Six.
Yes, everyone, Six, it seems, is our traitor, and I must admit I didn’t see that one coming and was completely floored. What could his motive be? I suppose he could have made a deal with the Galactic Authority to give him immunity for his own crimes if he turns 4 other wanted criminals in, but does that sound like Six? Surely to God, not! Not to mention, Roger Cross‘ character on The Strain was just killed off 2 weeks ago, and so for those viewers who are also fans of that show, this is a double-whammy. As you may recall from my Advance Preview, I participated in a press conference call with Executive Producer Joe Mallozzi and most of the cast earlier in the week, and several questions came up about this shocking twist. Also, as most of us know, there’s still no news about a season 2 pick-up, and so naturally, given tonight’s cliffhanger, questions were raised about that. Here’s what they had to say:
QUESTION: This question is for you, Roger. When did you find out from Joe that you were going to be the bad guy/mole?
ROGER CROSS: “[Laughs] You know it was one of those things where we were trying to figure it out the entire time. I think we actually have a recording of that. [Laughs] It was the last thing we shot on the last day of the shoot, and he hadn’t told us at that point. We literally found out on the last day. We had our speculations, and he did some tricky misdirection, did we Mr. Mallozzi. [Laughs] Like go for some fittings just to throw us off the trail. Actually, most of us had figured it out, but then, with all of the things that were happening, we all went away and said, “Nah! Maybe not.” Then, we got to the last day and the final shot and I could see, “Yeah, it’s me. See ya.” So, yeah, it literally was the last day that we found out.”
QUESTION: And, were you happy to be that guy?
ROGER CROSS: “You know, I don’t know if ‘happy’ is the word, but I enjoy it. I think it’s going to be fun in the upcoming season, if that happens. Yeah, I think it’s great, and I think there’s [a certain] motivation for him doing these things. I know he thinks he’s doing the right thing, and we’ll see if it’s the right thing or not, if we get the chance to show you.”
QUESTION: And for Joe, how does this play out with all the other stuff we’ve learned about Six? I’m sure you have a plan, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around that.
JOE MALLOZZI: “Yeah, you know, from the beginning, we know who the mole was going to be. And, then, from Episode 8 onwards, we started to drop subtle little clues. The clues are there. One clue, which I’m curious if the fans will pick up on, is in the very last shot where Six is walking down the corridor and is flanked by this guy, and very observant viewers should recognize the face. This is sort of a clue of what he’s doing and why he turns them in, and hopefully, you will get to see the magician’s reveal [in season 2], the why’s, the how’s. We have a lot of great ideas for season 2, and hopefully, we’ll get the chance to talk.”
QUESTION: What was everybody’s biggest surprise when you all read the finale script?
JODELLE FERLAND: “Every episode had something that shocked the team. Every time we got a script we just wanted the next one.”
ROGER CROSS: “These last few episodes, especially, we were just like, ‘Ahhh….'”
JODELLE FERLAND: “Yeah, and we were bothering Joe non-stop asking, “Please, please give us the next episode. Tell us what happens. You can’t do this to us!” but we got nothing out of him.
ROGER CROSS: “Except for that grin. That Mallozzi grin.”
MELISSA O’NEIL: “I was watching the finale on my iPad and yelling at the screen. So we better find out, we really better get a 2nd season. I want to know how it ends!”
To be honest, I know several people (including some of the journalists that were on the conference call) that thought Five would emerge as the mole. As it turns out, Five suspected it too, at least for a while.
JODELLE FERLAND: “Yeah, there was a point where I thought it was me, and we’d go back and forth with our theories. There would be a little bit there, and I would say, ‘You know what, it IS me!’ But, it didn’t last long.”
QUESTION: Can you all talk about working with Wil Wheaton?
ROGER CROSS: “Poor Wil. Airplanes killed us that day. Remember that, Joe?”
JOE MALLOZZI: “We were actually shooting by an airport and the poor guy has to deliver this incredibly long monologue. He’d get into it and then 30 seconds in a plane would buzz the area and we’d have to cut and start over again. He ended up delivering an entire monologue in pieces, but he was super professional and super focused and just a very nice guy to work with.”
JODELLE FERLAND: “I knew we were going to have Wil Wheaton on the show, but I never got to meet him! I was so sad. What happened is nobody told me. I was at the computer at home after work, and I saw something on his Instagram of Facebook and it was a small piece of the Dark Matter logo and he was saying it was a hint of what he was working on. And I looked at it for a while and I thought that looks really familiar, then I was like, “Wait a minute!” Then I texted Joe right away and I was like, “Wil Wheaton’s on our show! Why didn’t you tell me?” I was very excited about it and hopefully I’ll get to meet him some day.”
And, for those who did not know, Joe Mallozzi has been doing a fantastic after-show each week on Periscope that gives fans the opportunity to chat about the latest episode and to ask questions (which I personally think was a great idea).
JOE MALLOZZI: “[The idea] actually came from Syfy UK. They asked me if I’d be interested, and we did it for one of the Syfy UK broadcasts, and it was delightfully awkward but fun. [Laughs] So, I started doing them weekly, and this week, I will be live-tweeting and hopefully, have time to do both an east and west coast Periscope, as well as one for UK viewers on Monday.”
QUESTION: While we are waiting for season 2 (fingers crossed), are there any other Projects each of you will be in that the fans can look for?
ROGER CROSS: “Well, the final season of Continuum is coming, as most of you probably know on September 11th on Syfy. I also have a movie called Lockdown coming out. And, I’ll also be doing some episodes of Bones, basically all kinds of stuff, so you’ll definitely be seeing me.”
MELISSA O’NEIL: “I’ve just spent the last few days shooting on this show called Rogue where I play this hacker girl. That will be out over the holiday season. I am also working on a new CBS show called This Life, which will be starring Torri Higginson who plays our very own Commander Delaney Truffault. Oh, and I just finished doing a video game, but I can’t tell you much about that yet.”
In the meantime, the wait is on for news about a season 2. So, Syfy, you’re in the hot seat now! As soon as it’s announced, you will definitely know because I’ll be cheering it all over the Interwebs, social media, and any other platform that I can find.
