When Fear The Walking Dead returns for season 2 in just a few weeks, we will learn fairly quickly that zombies can’t swim — but they can sure wade and float! If you attended the FTWD Paley Fest event in Hollywood yesterday, you got to see this first-hand in an exclusive clip that depicted Nick (Frank Dillane) swimming in the ocean (and, yes, in those same crappy clothes!) and being attacked by a zombie. On a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Dillane was joined by Executive producers Gale Anne Hurd and David Erickson as well as fellow cast members Colman Domingo, Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Lorenzo James Henrie, Mercedes Mason, and Rubén Blades to discuss the show’s sophomore season and what we can expect.
Except for the theme of water, very little has been teased, but prior to the Q&A panel, the audience was treated to 2 exclusive clips. The first is that of Dillane being attacked in the water, and the second is a brief conversation between Madison and Daniel and how Daniel doesn’t trust Strand and in fact, no one should. Was he the only one who noticed that Strand was already packed up and ready to leave his luxurious hideaway in the mountains before all of this happened? What is Stand hiding? What is he running from?
Speaking of Strand, he was the most intriguing part of season 1 in my opinion even though he didn’t show up until the very end. He appears to be very smart, level-headed, but he also has a mystery about him which makes you want to sit up and learn more. At the panel, actor Colman Domingo described his character as “an enigma wrapped in a riddle wrapped in cash” but also adds that that strong veneer will slowly be chipped away as the season progresses. David Erickson goes on to add:
Strand is very good at recognizing the currencies. In this world, he knows Nick is a heroin addict, he knows he’s a survivor, he knows he’s lived on the fringe, he sees value in that. He sees possibility. We’ll start to learn more about those possibilities as the season progresses.
One question that was asked of Erickson — and that has been asked several times before — is whether the show will ever intersect with the mothership and any of its characters. And, just like the other times it has been asked, the answer was an emphatic “No.” The timelines of the 2 shows are too far apart, and of course, they are separated geographically. Sorry, fans of The Walking Dead !
Each actor also had the chance to talk about his character and how each will deal with all of the loss and changes going into season 2. Of all the responses, Frank Dillane’s is the one that really cracked me up. His mannerisms and affect are quite similar to Nick’s, and whether it was intentional of not, he had the audience, as well as the cast, laughing. Check it out:
