Warning: General spoilers ahead
Truth be told, this has been a rough week for me, both as a fan of Z Nation and as a journalist who has covered the show since the beginning. I attended Walker Stalker Con Nashville 2 weeks ago where cast members Keith Allan, Anastasia Baranova, Nat Zang, and Russell Hodgkinson hosted a Q&A panel to discuss with fans what to expect for season 3, how much they love being on the show, and just in general, how excited they all are to get back on set. Well, this bubble quickly burst this past week when TV Line reported that series star Keith Allan may not be returning for the new season due to contract disputes, so much so that The Asylum had posted a casting call for the show’s fan-favorite, Murphy. Needless to say, I was quite upset. However, on Friday, Keith finally tweeted that he was, indeed, returning for season 3, and so, all you Z-Whackers can rest easy now. Whew.
So, with all that behind us, let’s get back to being seriously excited about this show’s new season, which is scheduled to begin production on May 5th. While at Walker Stalker Con Nashville, the cast did drop a few hints of what fans have to look forward to in season 3, most notably that it will begin with a 2-part flashback episode. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am about this! The flashback episode last season where we got see all of the characters (yes, even Mack!) when the zombie apocalypse first broke was one of the best of the series thus far, and I was so hoping they’d do it again.
Also, as most of us probably suspected, we are also going to see lots more of Miss Lucy in season 3. However, don’t expect any more tea parties. As Keith pointed out, Lucy is aging very quickly, and while we don’t know yet how old she’ll be the next time we see her, she definitely won’t be a toddler any longer.
I talked with Showrunner Karl Schaefer right before the season 2 finale where he spilled even more about their plans for season 3 — you can find a link to that interview below (and, YES, he does talk about 10K’s fate!). In the meantime, check out the below video clips from the Walker Stalker Con Nashville panel. As you can see, the cast of this show has some fantastic chemistry — and not just when they are in character on-screen. They laughed, joked, and carried on like they had known each other for ages, and that alone made for one of the most enjoyable panels at the convention.
Z Nation returns for season 3 in September of 2016.
