Well, my dear Fannibals I’m sorry to report that season 3 will be the last course for Hannibal. Given the nosedive the ratings have taken since the season premiere, this really isn’t shocking but it is somewhat surprising that the decision was made before the new season barely got off the ground.
Fuller made a statement today and said, “NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared, and kept us on the air for three seasons despite Cancellation Bear Chow ratings and images that would have shredded the eyeballs of lesser Standards & Practices enforcers. [NBC president] Jen Salke and her team have been fantastic partners and creatively supportive beyond measure.”
“Hannibal is finishing his last course at NBC’s table this summer,” Fuller added, “but a hungry cannibal can always dine again. And personally, I look forward to my next meal with NBC.”
Fuller had said last year that he had a “backup plan” had NBC not renewed the show for season 3, and it is currently unknown if he still has such a plan now that the series has been officially cancelled.
And, for those wondering about San Diego Comic-Con, Fuller did confirm in a tweet this afternoon that while Hannibal is cancelled at NBC, the show is definitely still attending. SDCC is still over 2 weeks out, and perhaps with a little bit of luck, by then he might be able to announce that the series has already found a new home.
