In this week’s episode of SEAL Team, ‘Collapse,’ it truly is all about collapse.  We see the collapse of a young African democracy, the collapse of an embassy and, sadly, the collapse of a young special ops candidate.  In my opinion, we are also seeing the collapse of Max Thieriot’s (Clay Spenser) character arc.  I hope that it gets resuscitated very soon because I truly believe that the part of Clay was very well cast and has SO very much potential.  Right now, we can call the arc, at best, sophomoric.  Max does a great job with the material he’s given, but there is not a lot of quality material to work with.

This episode is reminiscent of an episode of Showtime’s hit show Homeland.  It is set in South Sudan which is timely since the headlines in real life  seem to be focused on Africa recently.  I guess it goes to show that the writers are ahead of the curve (and Congress) when it comes to what’s happening in the world militarily.  Kudos to the writing team.

David Boreanaz is doing an amazing job as Senior Chief Jason Hayes.  As I’ve watched him over the years in various roles, I believe that this role suits him best.  Not only is he believable as the all-American good guy but as an actor he has truly matured.  As the season progresses, it will be exciting to watch him take it up a notch or two and really find his stride as Jason Hayes.

On a sad note, in ‘Collapse,’ we lost Clay’s wingman (and only friend) Brian (played by the hottie Jay Hayden) to a training accident.  It was our first training team casualty and it puts us on notice that the show runners are not afraid to kill off the characters we care about.  Also, a shout out to Toni Trucks as the badass Lisa Davis.  She’s a strong character and I want to get to know her better.  Along with costar Jessica Pare’ (CIA Mandy), strong women kick butt and take names on this male-dominated team.
