Well, folks, as of May 5th, it’s official — production has now begun on season 3 of Z Nation, and our rag-tag group of Z-apocalypse survivors are now on to their next adventure after delivering Murphy to California in the season 2 finale. However, as we saw in those final moments, the fun times with our favorite zybrid may be far from over with Murphy going rogue and on his way now to form his own zombie army. Then, with the addition of El Scorpion and Murphy’s rapidly aging spawn, Lucy, to the mix, it’ll be interesting to see how all of this plays out.
There hasn’t been much chatter on season 3 yet with filming being underway for less than a month now, but fortunately, I was able to catch up with the cast at Walker Stalker Con Chicago 2106 this past weekend and chat with several of them, including series star Anastasia Baranova (“Addy Carver”). As you watch the interview, one thing you’ll immediately notice is just how excited Anastasia is about the show. While it is technically “just a job,” throughout the entire interview, she makes it sound like it’s nothing but, and honestly, I don’t think I have ever encountered an actress or actor more upbeat about their role and their series. But, don’t take my word for it, check out what she had to tease about season 3:
First, and foremost, this does confirm all of the “movie” rumors that have been circulating over the past few weeks. Keith Allan was the first cast member to mention this a couple of weeks ago when he tweeted that season 3 would begin with a “movie,” and as soon as I saw it, I immediately thought of something Executive Producer and Showrunner Karl Schaefer told me in an interview right before the season 2 finale — that the next season would start with a 2-hour premiere and would be composed completely of flashbacks. As Anastasia explains, this is all true, and what’s more, the 2-parter is to show the audience how the group crossed paths with the character who eventually will become the big baddie of season 3.
And, who may that baddie be? Of course, Anastasia doesn’t address this in the interview, but if I had to guess, I’d say it may be the character only known as “The Man” who has been cast by Joseph Gatt.
Karl Schaefer had already said in another post-season 2 interview that our group would be encountering the “bounty hunter of all bounty hunters,” and given that Gatt has a history of playing villains, I suspect this may be our guy.
Getting excited already? I know I am, and we still have over 4 months to wait before the return of the series! Sigh. But, the good news is I have more ZNation interviews to come, with the next one being with the very lovely Pisay Pao AKA “Cassandra.” There’s a surprise or 2 in that interview as well, and so, be sure to check back tomorrow for all the details.
Z Nation returns for season 3 in the Fall of 2016.
